The Granada Historic Center & Albaycin Walking Tour reveals the layers of fascinating history that have created the present-day city of Granada. You will tour the heart of the city and the labyrinthine streets of the old Moorish quarter, Albaycin, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The adventure begins at Plaza Bib-Rambla. As you walk, your knowledgeable guide will entertain you with tales of the city’s turbulent past. As well as the historic landmarks, you’ll also notice Granada’s many lively restaurants and bars and your guide can recommend good places to check out after the tour is over.

You’ll see the famous Granada cathedral, a Spanish Renaissance masterpiece on Gothic foundations. It was built by Queen Isabella immediately after the Christian conquest of Granada on the site of an ancient mosque. One of its most famous features is the exquisite Capilla Real (Royal Chapel) where Queen Isabella I and King Ferdinand II, as well as other royals, are buried.

You’ll visit the Alcaicería, formerly the Moorish silk market. The neighborhood was destroyed by fire in 1843 and what you see now is a 19th century restoration full of colorful souvenir shops. Another landmark is the Plaza del Carmen, the site for a convent and a church built in the 16th century.

Your guide will then lead you uphill to Albaycin, the old Arab quarter, built on a medieval town plan with cobbled streets and small squares. Admire the attractive houses in Moorish and Andalusian style and let the centuries roll back as you explore the warren of narrow alleys.

If the scent of kebabs fills your nostrils, don’t be surprised. It’s not a ghostly echo of the past. Some of the Islamic flavor has indeed returned to the Albaycin thanks to a growing North African population which has introduced kebab, cake and tea shops and even a brand-new mosque.

stop to see magnificent views of rose red Alhambra Palace at Carvajales. Make sure you have your camera with you to capture this panorama before heading back downhill to Plaza Bib-Rambla where your tour ends.
